1 Corinthians 1:20
"Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where
is the disputer of this age? Hath not God
made foolish the wisdom of this world"
All the valued learning of this world was confounded by the Christian revelation and by the triumphs of the cross. When God would save the world, He took a way by Himself; "and for good reason," because all the science of the heathen world did not, and could not, effectually bring home the world to God. Men are puffed up by their imaginary knowledge, and therefore the preaching of Christ was and to some still thought as foolishness in the eyes of worldly-wise men. Our living through one who died, our being blessed by one who was made a curse, our being justified by one who was condemned, seemed foolish.
There is a great deal of meanness and weakness in the outward appearance of our religion. Very few distinguished character in any of these were chosen for the work of the ministry. Not the wise men after the flesh. Not the mighty or the noble. But God sees as no man sees. He has chosen the foolish things of the world, the weak things of the world, the despicable things of the world, men of low and high rank, with no education to be the preachers of the Gospel. Few of distinguished rank and character were called to be Christians. Few of the wise, and noble, and mighty, embraced the doctrine of the cross. Yet what glorious discoveries are there of divine wisdom in the whole scheme of the Gospel.
Amen!!
