We Were Dead!

                                                      Ephesians 2:1
                                          "And you hath he quickened"
                                                 "Who were dead"

As part of His description of our past before we met Christ, God says we are "dead" (Ephesians 2:1).  That's a little hard for most of us to believe.  How can a person walk around, live, and breathe, and still be dead?  Maybe it's hard to understand because we don't fully realize what the word "dead" means.  We think it means the absolute  end - termination.  Actually, the Bible definition is more like "separation" than "termination."
It is easier to understand if we think of God as the source and sustainer of life  Jesus Said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6).  God created man and gave him life. Later, man sinned and was driven from the garden of Eden and the presence of God. Man became separated from God by sin.  To be separated from God is to be separated from life.  It is spiritual death.  Life means to be united, or reconciled to God. That is the thought behind the word "quickened" in verse 1.  To "quicken" means to "make alive"  So we know that the only way that we can become alive is,  "The New Birth" which is given by God through the blood of  "Jesus Christ our Lord".      Amen
