Zechariah 12:10
"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom
they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth
for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one
that is in bitterness for his firstborn."
Martyrs shed blood for Christ, and penitents shed tears for sin, "And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment,"(Luke 7:38). This sorrow for sin is not superficial. It is called in scripture a breaking of the heart, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise," (Ps. 51:17). O how desirable is our Saviour to a troubled soul! Christ is Christ indeed, and mercy is mercy indeed. Until the heart is full of remorse it is not fit for Christ.
My Friends, Godly sorrow shows itself; when Christian's knows that they have been saved from hell and shall never be damned, and yet still they grieve for sinning against that free grace which has pardoned them. As our sin is ever before us, so God's promise must be ever before us.
Amen!
