Ecclesiastes 7:16
"Be not righteous over much;
neither make thyself over wise:
why shouldest thou destroy thyself"
There is the possibility that in doing righteous things, one could become ritualistic, merely going through the formality of religion. If one would do that, he or she would never apply the truth to their heart. In turn they are like the wicked; they find security in their ways, but to continue in them will only result in death and destruction. They see themselves as being able to escape God's wrath, when in reality, they are acting foolishly.
No matter who you are or what God has called you to do, God examines the heart of the individual and knows whether a person is practicing religion in form only, or if he is sincere. Jesus addressed the Pharisees on this same issue. Jesus condemned them for their wrong motives in serving God. Jesus saw that they were seeking prestige from their religious positions. Do you know anyone like that, if so confront them just as Christ did. As believers in Jesus Christ and if we love our brothers and sisters and Christ; we will be against the development of a wrong attitude about service to God.
